La Boulangerie! and Anthropoid Ethosare pleased to present Happy Days!, an online presentation of works by Mexican artist Mariana Sanchez.
Mariana Sanchez works between painting, scenic design, and architecture. Her practice bridges figuration and landscape, constantly moving between abstraction and representation. With a background in architecture, an MFA in Scenic Design from Yale University and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in London, Sanchez approaches painting as both a stage and a confrontation questioning the patriarchal legacy of academic oil painting and its gendered roles.
Her brushwork is expressive, often evoking pareidolia, where images seem to surface and dissolve. Influenced by Miriam Cahn, James Ensor, Rita Ackermann, Gilberto Aceves Navarro, John D. Graham, Nicole Eisenman and Louise Bourgeois among others; she works across unconventional surfaces with visceral application, constructing scenes that oscillate between the intimate and the unsettling. Domestic relationships and everyday gestures shift into charged encounters, where tenderness seeps into menace and the surface itself resists containment.
Sanchez has exhibited in London, with works in private collections in Switzerland, London, Mexico City, and New York.
