La Boulangerie! Off-sites and Anthropoid Ethos are pleased to present Protected Territories: Mimetic Boundaries, a solo exhibition of new work by Georgian artist Nika Koplatadze, at Alteridad, a private pop-up space in a house in Roma Norte, Mexico City. The exhibition can be visited by appointment only from 29 August to 21 November 2026.
Every ecosystem generates its own grammar of protection. Camouflage, scales, shells and skin are more than decorative features. They are forms of material intelligence, acting as porous membranes between the organism and the world. Moving across species and scales, Koplatadze considers how these protective systems connect the visible landscape with the concealed structures of living beings.
Painting lies at the heart of this inquiry. Koplatadze’s landscapes evoke Amerindian perspectivism, approaching the environment as a reciprocal field in which sky, sun, organism and viewer coexist. The exhibition then moves into three-dimensional form. Organic matter suspended in resin is held between preservation and decay, transforming fragments of active ecosystems into material archives. Finally, the tortilla introduces a distinctly Mexican material vocabulary. As it passes from softness to dryness and gradually hardens towards bone, each surface retains an unrepeatable imprint of hand, maize, heat and sun.

Nika Koplatadze (born 1997, Tbilisi, Georgia) is an artist based in Mexico City. His practice unfolds through painting, sculpture, installation, objects and artist books, rooted in a sustained engagement with natural processes and material presence. Human figures are absent from the work; landscapes, surfaces and forms act instead as carriers of psychological and spatial experience.
His research moves laterally across scale and species — pangolin, serpent, manta ray, jaguar — tracing how mimicry and camouflage operate as strategies of permeable boundary rather than mere surface. The tortilla appears throughout as a material clock, while jacaranda pods, oyster shells, eucalyptus and bougainvillea leaves are suspended in resin as arrested ecosystems. His landscape paintings treat the Mexican landscape — amate, ahuehuete, pine — not as a fixed view but as a position.
Koplatadze represented the Georgia Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale (2024). His work is held in private collections internationally.
